August has not treated the 49ers well.
While we’re less than a day into the month, the 49ers have already lost third-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall for the season (as he decided to have surgery on his nagging PCL), and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday morning that executive vice president of football operations Paraag Marathe is leaving the team.
This news stemmed from an organization-wide email team owner Jed York sent on Saturday morning. Marathe’s exit is so that he can focus on Leeds United and Rangers FC, which are two soccer teams based in Europe. The 49ers have investments in both clubs, and Marathe is a chairman for Leeds United, so he’s shifting his attention to those endeavors.
Marathe had been with the 49ers for the past 25 seasons and was extremely well regarded within the football community. He played an integral role in the construction of Levi’s Stadium, the 49ers’ home field, and also had his hands in other aspects of the franchise’s operations.
The 49ers continue to make headlines in what has been a hectic week for the team. While some of these headlines have been positive, such as the team’s decision to bring wide receiver Deebo Samuel back in free agency after he spent the 2025 season with the Commanders, the biggest story was the car accident that head coach Kyle Shanahan got into, which went public on July 25.
Fans will have to keep an eye out on who replaces Marathe in the coming weeks. Whoever it is will clearly have big shoes to fill.
