A.J. Brown is on the clock.
As the calendar strikes June 1, the Eagles’ embattled wide receiver, who has been unhappy for the better part of the last two years in Philadelphia, will reportedly likely be traded since his contract now becomes much more attractive to prospective teams.
While speaking on Philadelphia radio station 97.5 The Fanatic with John Kincade and Andrew Salciunas, ESPN insider Adam Schefter gave the latest update on where Brown-to-New England trade talks stand.
“At some point today, I’d imagine (Monday) morning, Eliot Wolf, Howie Roseman, the front offices and coaching staff in New England, and the front offices and coaching staffs in Philadelphia will come into their offices, and there will be a phone call that’s made,” Schefter said. “There’s an understanding that they would be getting back together today, reconvening and reopening the conversations that were along the way weeks ago. They have to pick up where they left off. Do I think that will happen? I do. I think that will happen later today. Could there be something that changes things? Always. Do I think there will be? No.
“Do I think he’s going to be traded here at some point here, in the next 24-48 hours to New England? That would be my best guess and best information.”
Brown, who was married last month in a gaudy California coastal ceremony in which no current teammates attended, has a contract that becomes significantly more tradeable beginning at 4:01 p.m. ET, as it becomes a post-June 1 transaction and Brown’s cap savings become significant.
Since he was given a big contract extension in 2024, his dead cap money is significant and would have been $43 million if someone traded for him prior to June 1.
Since all parties waited until now, his dead cap hit is more spread out across multiple seasons, with just $16.4 million due this upcoming season.
Previous reports speculated that Brown had been discussed as a trade candidate to the Patriots in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and perhaps more, though that compensation is subject to change as discussions reignite.
Brown has been looking to get out of Philadelphia for at least parts of the last two seasons, making scenes on the sidelines as he read self-help books and even calling his situation a “s–t show” in Philadelphia.
If he is traded, expect the Eagles’ receiver room to be led by DeVonta Smtih and first round pick Makai Lemon.
