Las Vegas Raiders fans aren’t so sure about Ashton Jeanty’s injury severity as they were one day ago.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Raiders’ star second-year running back made an Instagram post that showed him from the back while he took a knee on the turf. The post is captioned, “Romans 8:28”.
The next slide on Jeanty’s post has that Bible verse written out: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”.
There’s no way of knowing whether the post and Bible verse is a way of Jeanty addressing his injury. But it is his first social media post since the injury occurred, and many Raiders fans are expressing concern that the cryptic post could be an indication that his injury is worse than initially believed.
Romans 8:28 is often invoked in sports when someone is trying to make sense of a setback, especially with an injury. Therefore, some Raiders fans are making sense of this post by convincing themselves Jeanty is saying that even if the injury is bad, he believes there’s a bigger purpose behind it.
Jeanty went down with a leg injury during the Raiders’ practice on Sunday. It wasn’t clear what exactly happened to Jeanty initially, but the whole practice pausing so his teammates could take a knee around him convinced many that the second-year back might miss significant time.
Then it came out that Jeanty suffered an ankle sprain, which could cause him to miss the start of the season. But a sprained ankle felt like a win, given that the fear was that he’d suffered a season-ending leg injury.
Despite the worry Jeanty’s post might have produced, Raiders fans should wait until they hear Jeanty address his ankle directly before taking his post as proof there’s something to be concerned about.
Perhaps Jeanty will speak with the media during the Raiders’ preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.
