The Pitt wrote off Supriya Ganesh before season 3, but could the actress return as Dr. Samira Mohan?

“I don’t know. I don’t think so, but you never know,” executive producer R. Scott Gemmill told Variety on Thursday, April 16.

Gemmill didn’t completely rule the possibility out, adding, “If there’s a good reason and a good story or if the show demands it, if the story lines demand it, for sure. We’re still in some of the early stages of figuring out season 3.”

During the season 2 finale, which aired on Thursday, Mohan had a conversation with Robby (Noah Wyle) before he left on his spirit quest. Her future at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center remained undetermined and might not get addressed when the show returns for season 3.

“I think Mohan’s just not going to be working this shift,” Gemmill told TV Insider. “That’s simple as that probably is.”

News originally broke earlier this month that Ganesh, 28, would be departing the show. The decision received backlash from fans who were still upset about Tracy Ifeachor’s exit after season 1.

“The reality of the hospital is that people come and go. And we’ve known that since we started. And it’s one of the things, it’s good and it’s bad,” Gemmill continued. “It’s good because it keeps things fresh and it also makes it feel like a real working environment.”

He added: “It’s bad because we lose people, characters that we have grown to love, but that’s just part of the process. So we know that eventually a lot of people will come and go, and that’s just going to be the nature of the show.”

Gemmill noted that Robby is the only character who will always be featured on the show. The fate of the rest of the cast remains unclear although Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez and Sepideh Moafi are all expected to return in season 3.

Ganesh, meanwhile, opened up about where she saw Mohan going from here.

“What I think she’s really trying to do is stay in Pittsburgh. I think she’s really trying to figure out a way to stay in the hospital because there’s nothing left for her in Jersey,” she told TV Insider on Thursday. “Her mom really was her only tether there, and it is her realizing she has a few more tethers here than she does back home.”

Ganesh continued: “I think she is trying to figure out what she can do to feel like she has community. But I also think for me, I wish there was this sense of, ‘I wish you could just take a break. I really want you to take a break. I think you’re so burnt out. I think you’re reaching this point of exhaustion emotionally, physically, all of those things. And you’ve really gone through one of the worst days of your life.’ I almost want her to stop thinking about all of those things and focus on something else.”

The Pitt is currently streaming on HBO Max.
