Do not refer to this Chicago sports radio personality and columnist by his last name under any circumstances.
Dan Bernstein now has a target on his back after Stoolies took exception to a radio interaction he had with Barstool Eddie, who referred to him as “Bernstein.”
Eddie hosted the four-hour afternoon drive radio show last Thursday on 670 The Score with Matt Spiegel, which led into the “Bernstein and Holmes” show.
The hosts of the two shows were talking on the air as a handoff when Eddie referred to Bernstein by his last name.
This apparently is a no-no.
“You can call me Dan or you can call me Bernsie, but you don’t know me like that,” Bernstein said after Eddie was informed of his offense.
Laurence Holmes, Bernstein’s co-host for the evening radio show, turned to Bernstein and asked, “What did he call you?”
Bernstein snarkily replied, “Bernstein,” while sneering.
The exchange, which was caught on camera during the show’s livestream, set off Barstool founder Dave Portnoy and others at the company on Tuesday.
“Look at these f–king guys!! This was after the interview with @dan_bernstein,” Portnoy wrote on X. “Stoolies have never had a more important war than to ruin this guys life (professionally speaking of course). Every army we got has to zone in on Bernstein. What an a–hole.”
And they used their massive and loyal followings to go after Bernstein, who has yet to address the interaction.
“Dan Bernstein has been a mainstay in Chicago sports for as long as I can remember … As of late he’s turned into a miserable a—hole … who is always grumpy,” Eddie said on a video on X.
“On top of that he despises Barstool … He’s always found a way to take pot shots at us on the air…. The important context here is that I was not in the same studio as Bernstein. I was at a remote in a sporting good store. There was no reading of the body language or anything like that. When I heard it I had a pretty good idea, a hunch he wasn’t happy … I called him Bernstein like seven more times. Not everyone there was happy about it … I didn’t say that to get a rise out of him. Who in their right mind would think saying someone’s last name would piss someone off? I honestly don’t understand it.”
According to reports on Tuesday, Bernstein’s show had to stop taking calls from listeners as the lines had been overrun by Barstool fans.
Bernstein’s posts on X have been littered with comments poking fun at him in some way since Tuesday.
“[redacted] & Holmes Show,” X user @Alex-muzzo posted.
“BERNSTEIN IS A MASSIVE LOSER,” another, @breadstark2, added.
“Bold of Bernstein to utter another man’s last name without knowing him like that,” @xgoldie5 also commented.
As of Wednesday morning, one of Bernstein’s podcast account’s posts had 17 likes, four retweets, and 432 comments from rabid Barstool fanatics.
Another had eight retweets, 16 likes, and 728 comments, with most, if not all, of the comments from Barstool fans.
