Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed to reporters after Clevland’s loss to the Bengals that Deshaun Watson was dealing with a torn Achilles, which led to him being carted off the field late in the second quarter.
“Let’s get the tests to confirm, but that’s what it looks like,” he said.
The injury will likely end his season after just seven weeks and the Browns standing at a dismal 1-6 after the 21-14 home defeat.
Watson suffered the injury when his leg seemed to hyperextended during a noncontact play.
The Browns QB dropped back before pivoting to a run and when he planted his left leg that is when the injury appeared to occur.
Watson quickly went down to the ground, clearly in pain.
The controversial quarterback was tended to on the field before he was placed on a cart while his teammates surrounded him.
Watson looked incredibly emotional as he was carted off with a towel draped over his head, which he used to cover his face at one point.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over at quarterback for the Browns and Cleveland managed to cap the drive with a Nick Chubb touchdown run.
Jameis Winston had been inactivated by Cleveland as their third emergency quarterback prompting Thompson-Robinson to take over for the rest of the game.
Thompson-Robinson went 11-of-24 passing for 82 yards and two interceptions before he was injured in the fourth quarter and Winston finally came in.
Watson had thrown 15-of-17 for 128 yards before he left with just under two minutes to play in the first half.
This marks the second consecutive season Watson has had an injury end his season early.
Watson has appeared in just 19 games since he arrived in Cleveland via a trade back in 2022 and the injury appears to add another ugly chapter to an increasingly ugly season for the Browns.
