A nurse has claimed that this is the “hottest” hangover tip to exist — but a doctor disagrees with her assertions.

TikTok user Rory Uphold took to the platform to share the “hottest” hangover tip from her sister, who works as a nurse.

“Drink a Coke. It’s high in phosphorus,” Rory’s sister said, referring to the mineral that helps produce energy.

In the comment section, Rory’s specified that yes, people should mostly focus on electrolytes and water when it comes to hangovers.

People had a huge reaction to the information.

“OK so I’m not crazy, the McDonald’s Coke really does revive me after all,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “A McDonald’s Coke could wake me up from a coma.”

“I always did because I crave it after a night out. Never knew why,” another said.

One shared: I’m a nurse that’s been my tip for years. I never drink Coke normally but ALWAYS keep some in my fridge for hangover days.”

Many asked whether it mattered if they drank Diet or regular Coca-Cola.

However, Dr. Zac Turner, who has four health and medical degrees under his belt and specialises in preventive health and wellness, had a different stance on the matter.

He said that while it may sound “fun and fizzy,” there is actually a science behind hangover cures.

“First, the caffeine in Coke could give you a brief mental lift, tackling that morning-after brain fog,” Dr Turner told news.com.au.

“But remember, caffeine is a diuretic, which might push you to the bathroom more and worsen dehydration — a key culprit behind those dreaded hangover symptoms. Sugar in Coke offers a quick energy boost too, which could temporarily alleviate that weak, sluggish feeling.”

He said while it may initially help it will lead to a sugar drop — and fast — making you feel even worse.

“But here’s the kicker: while Coke might tickle your taste buds and help you feel momentarily better, it doesn’t address the real issue. A hangover is caused by dehydration, inflammation, and electrolyte imbalance, all of which Coke does little to fix,” he said.

“Research has shown that the best treatments focus on rehydration, restoring electrolytes, and dealing with inflammation. So, while Coke might help with nausea or an upset stomach, water, sports drinks, or rehydration salts are far more effective in tackling the root cause.

“In conclusion, sure, crack open that Coke if you want a quick pick-me-up, but for a real recovery, prioritize water and electrolytes — maybe add in some rest and a hearty breakfast.

“Consider Coke the ‘feel-good movie’ of hangover cures: fun for a while, but not exactly tackling the deeper plot!”
