Elijah Zion Bieniemy has been arrested and charged in connection to the shooting of his mother Mia, the wife of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was shot at the couple’s home in Ashburn,Va. on Sunday night. Authorities responded to a report of a shooting around 7:32 p.m. and arrived on the scene to find an adult female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, per the report.
The couple’s 27-year-old son was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling.
He was brought to the Loudoun County adult detention center and is being held without bond.
The sheriff’s office stated the investigation is ongoing.
Per ESPN Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor, Mia remains in stable condition.
During the incident, Eric was away with the Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Mo.
He has since left the Chiefs and did not attend Monday’s training camp practice to support his wife.
In a statement to ESPN, the Chiefs said they are “aware of an incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.”
Earlier this year, the Chiefs brought back Bieniemy after three years away from the team.
After a Super Bowl win in 2022, Bieniemy moved on as the offensive coordinator of the Commanders for just one season. He then had a brief college football coaching stint with UCLA in 2024 and last year he served as the running backs coach for the Bears.
After a playoff-less season last year, the Chiefs parted way with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and went on to seek out Bieniemy.
