I really like the Padres to cover Tuesday in front of their home fans. San Diego has the starting pitching advantage with Michael King on the hill, and the Padres are hitting the ball well against Los Angeles.
King was excellent in San Diego’s 4-0 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the Wild Card round. He threw seven scoreless innings and had 12 strikeouts, and it wasn’t that surprising since he finished the regular season with a 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts, which were both top 10 in MLB.
King also had a 1.57 ERA in the month of September, so it really seems like he’s just in the zone. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Walker Buehler is coming off a regular season in which he had a 5.38 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.
Buehler did have a few good starts in September and has some playoff experience under his belt, but it’s clear King is pitching better right now.
I also can’t help but notice how well San Diego is swinging the bats. Its 10-run outburst in Game 2 was obviously very impressive, but scoring five runs off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Game 1 was no small feat, either.
