Gary Cohen couldn’t hold his disgust in during the Wednesday broadcast of the Mets’ nightcap of their doubleheader with the Cubs, and the team’s TV play-by-play voice obliterated the team for their performance on Wednesday night at Citi Field.
In one of the more embarrassing losses in recent memory, the Mets’ infielders committed six errors in the ugly 10-5 defeat at the hands of the Cubs. That came after the first game in which the Mets were smacked around by the Cubs 10-3.
After the Mets made another error in the top of the ninth in the second game, Cohen couldn’t take it anymore.
“I mean what do you say at this point? I mean, this team is in the depths of despair,” Cohen said on the PIX 11 telecast. “Can’t get starting pitching to hold the other team at bay. Struggling with their offense, and now the defense falls apart.”
Cohen went on to label the six infield errors “unprecedented.”
But the Mets broadcaster wasn’t done there.
During the Amazin’s final at-bat of the game, he was provided with another chance to dump on the team.
“This is the kind of game that causes reevaluations,” he added. “You can profess all you want in being confident in the team you have. But this has been nothing short of ugly.”
Cohen wasn’t the only one upset with the team.
Mets fans at Citi Field began chanting “Pete Alonso” at different points of the game, longing for the slugger who left in the offseason for the Orioles.
To sum up the day for the Mets, they allowed 10 unanswered runs in the first game, the six errors in the second and have now lost five straight games to move them 12 games under .500.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called the loss “embarrassing” and said “the last game was unacceptable.”
