At 7:30 tonight, the 7-5 Minnesota Golden Gophers are taking on the 6-6 Virginia Tech Hokies in the 2025 Duke’s Mayo Bowl at Charlotte, NC’s Bank of America Stadium, and, yes, the winning team’s coach will have a jar of mayonnaise dumped on their head.
In order to secure that highly-coveted jar dump, P.J. Fleck’s Golden Gophers are hoping to repeat the success of their final regular season game of 2024 when they handily defeated Wisconsin, 24-7. Quarterback Max Brosmer completed 17 of 26 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns while running back Darius Taylor rushed for 143 yards.
While 7-5 doesn’t sound like the team had a spectacular season, the university has had quite a bit of success in the 2020s. Minnesota’s appearance in the Mayo Bowl will be their fourth bowl game in four years. Last season, they came out on top in the GameAbove Sports Bowl over Bowling Green.
As for their opponents, Brent Pry’s Hokies also capped 2024 with a victory. On Nov. 30, quarterback William Watson III and running back Bhayshul Tuten shut down interstate rivals Virginia by a score of 37-17.
However, they may be shorthanded coming into tonight since All-America defensive linemen Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Aeneas Peebles have declared for the NFL draft. Receivers Jaylin Lane and Da’Quan Felton have done the same.
