The WNBA season may be far from over, but the in-season Commissioner’s Cup tournament ends tonight with the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Final between the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty.
The annual tournament, now in its fourth year, features qualifying games within each division before one team from the east and one from the west meet in the final game. It’s familiar territory for Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and the rest of the Liberty, who played in this game last season but fell to the Las Vegas Aces in what would become a preview to last year’s WNBA Finals.
The outcome of tonight’s matchup has no bearing on the league standings, but the players are competing for something: $500,000 split among everyone playing in the game (roughly $41 for each member of the winning team, an additional $5,000 for the MVP, and $10k for each member of the losing team).
