Pez dispensers were a childhood delight.
Your favorite character offloaded a tiny brick of candy each time you opened it. It was pure magic.
But there was always one little hiccup, loading the Pez candies into the dispenser.
It was a hassle; you could lose a few if you weren’t strategic.
That is until a viral video surfaced with a seemingly simple loading hack.
The video has stacked up (pun intended) more than 4 million views and shows the candy being loaded into the bottom of the Pez dispenser fully wrapped. When pressed down, the wrapper pops out the bottom. And only the candy remains.
Genius, right?
“My whole childhood was a lie,” the video was captioned.
It didn’t take long before Pez-enthusiasts jumped into the chat in awe of what they’d seen and couldn’t wait to relive their childhood and try the hack for themselves.
“I’ve been doing this wrong my whole life,” one user wrote.
“YEARS OF MY LIFE! WASTED!!” another lamented.
“Wtf, I grew up placing them in one by one,” a third wrote.
Another joked that they wouldn’t have denied themselves Pez if they had known this trick: “That’s why when people offer me Pez, the answer is always no because I don’t know if they had clean hands loading it.”
“Me over here taking like ten minutes to put them in one by one,” another added.
Does the viral hack work?
But other commenters were quick to mention they tried it, and it didn’t work.
“I’m 54 years old and still having issues… lol. I call them champagne problems, but still… come on!” a long-time customer said.
“IT DOES NOT WORK! THE PACKAGE FALLS OUT!!” one angry comment read.
“And this is how the candies land on the floor,” another quipped.
It’s sad to say, but it’s true, and the iconic brand confirmed it. Telling TODAY Food that the viral hack is not how you load a Pez dispenser.
“The video that was making the rounds on social media shows an impossible way to load a PEZ dispenser, looks fun and easy but simply not possible,” said a Pez spokesperson.
How to load a Pez dispenser?
To ensure that all Pez-lovers were on the same page, they responded with a social video indicating how to load a dispenser.
It’s not as straightforward as the viral video would have you believe.
“Myth Busters: you can’t load a wrapped #PEZ candy roll from the bottom. Check out the proper way. Bonus if you get all 12 tablets in the first try,” the how-to video was captioned on Instagram.
The official Pez process is to open the dispenser, partially unwrap the candy sleeve and stack all twelve pieces inside the dispenser.
“I just wasted an entire pack of lemon PEZ (my favorite) because loading the dispensers is a nightmare, and half the time, you end up dropping some or all of them. I love PEZ, but it’s such a chore refilling,” a Pez-ed-off customer replied.
And finally, “I know the video was a lie, but someone needs to reverse-engineer it into reality!”
