Jay Silva, a longtime MMA fighter who competed in the UFC, died Sunday, according to Polish MMA promotion FAME.

His death came less than a week after he turned 45. The cause of death has yet to be released.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of FAME fighter Jay Silva. Through his performances, Jay brought a great smile, positive energy, and the professionalism of a true athlete,” FAME MMA wrote on social media. “He will forever remain a part of our federation’s history! We extend our sincerest condolences to Jay’s loved ones, family, and friends. Rest in peace!”

Silva’s two UFC bouts were against CB Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 19 in 2009 and Chris Leben at UFC Fight Night 20 in 2010. Both resulted in decision losses.

The former nightclub bouncer in New York developed his love for MMA after he watched the first season of the UFC’s “The Ultimate Fighter” television series in 2005.

It wasn’t until 2007, though, that UFC star Quinton “Rampage” Jackson convinced him to move to California, where he started training seriously.

The native of Luanda, Angola, spent most of his career in cage fighting, competing in Superior Cage Combat, Bellator, and kickboxing competitions. He ended his career 12-14-1.

“I want to be remembered as the greatest fighter the world has ever seen. I want people to remember me as a beast,” Silva said in 2009.

Silva’s opponents spanned from UFC fighter Alex Pereira’s head coach, Plinio Cruz, to five-time World’s Strongest Man Mariusz Pudzianowski.

He earned the nickname “The Spider Killer” in 2012 after defeating Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove at Superior Cage Combat 4.

His most recent fight was against Denis Labryga at FAME 25 in April 2025 in Częstochowa, Poland. Silva lost by unanimous decision.
