Kelly Stafford candidly shared some of the hard times she experienced during the early days of her relationship with now-husband Matthew Stafford.

“Looking back at Detroit, I would say I was happy because I loved him, but I was also unhappy because I didn’t really know where I fit in or who I was,” Kelly, 37, shared during a Wednesday, July 1 appearance on “The Cutting Edge” podcast. “The move to L.A. really helped me realize I can be what I want to be, too.”

She added, “But I do think you lose yourself in what everyone else expects you to be.”

Kelly met Matthew, 38, while they were attending the University of Georgia. Mathew was drafted to the Detroit Lions in 2009, where he played until 2020. Matthew kicked off the 2021 NFL season with the Los Angeles Rams.

Kelly wed Matthew in 2015, as his NFL career flourished. Kelly admitted during the recent podcast appearance that she lost herself, in a way, amid Matthew’s burgeoning success.

“You end up being this partner and your image is known as, you know, I was Matthew Stafford’s girlfriend and then I was Matthew Stafford’s fiancée, Matthew Stafford’s wife,” Kelly said. “You tend to lose who you are, or I did.”

She added, “I would remind myself to just stay true to the values I have. Reminder that I can chase after my own goals too, it doesn’t just have to be about his.”

Kelly and Matthew are the parents of four daughters, twins Sawyer and Chandler, 9, Hunter, 8, and Tyler, 6. Aside from her duties as a mom, Kelly kicked off a successful podcasting career in 2021, after Matthew became the L.A. Rams’ quarterback.

“I didn’t really come to it until I moved to L.A.,” she said last week, seemingly referring to her own career. “So, 12 [years] into it.”

Kelly and Matthew have continued to prove that their relationship is stronger than ever, even stepping out to attend Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding days after this podcast episode launched.

“A night that reminded us all just how lucky we are to have found our person,” Kelly captioned an Instagram post on Saturday, July 4, showing off her and Matthew’s looks at the high-profile nuptials.

Swift, 36, and Kelce, 36, wed at New York City’s iconic Madison Square Garden on Friday, July 3. Just after the couple exchanged their “I dos,” a digital billboard outside the venue read “JusT&T Married,” confirming that they were officially husband and wife.

A statement sent out after the wedding confirmed that Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony. The statement also revealed that both Swift and Kelce’s looks were Christian Dior Haute Couture with Christian Louboutin shoes and Cartier jewlery.

“Taylor and Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen,” the statement shared. “Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honor Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man.”
