The 2026 NFL regular season is still weeks away, but the Commanders have already suffered a crushing hit.
Left tackle Laremy Tunsil is going to miss time after he suffered a torn triceps in practice Saturday, according to multiple reports.
The Athletic reported Tunsil is likely to undergo surgery for the injury. According to the Mayo Clinic, triceps surgery could come with a recovery timeline of “three months or more.”
ESPN added that Tunsil is likely to miss a significant amount of the regular season after getting injured during one-on-one drills.
Losing Tunsil, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is a huge loss for a Commanders team that’s looking for a rebound after a disappointing 5-12 season in 2025.
Tunsil, 32, has been one of the best offensive tackles in the league since getting selected in the first round of the 2013 draft by the Dolphins.
After one season with Washington, Tunsil inked a two-year extension with the Commanders that comes with $61.5 million in guaranteed money and became the highest-paid player at his position.
In 2025, he started 14 games and graded out as the second-best pass-blocking tackle in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus’ measurement system. He was sixth overall at the position.
Andrew Wylie, who has spent a lot of his career at right tackle and both guard positions, is now expected to step in for Tunsil at left tackle, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. He played in 16 games for Washington last season and started in five.
