The 2024 Presidents Cup got off to a wild start on Thursday at Royal Montreal Golf Club when Canadian golfer Mackenzie Hughes chugged a beer to hype up the crowd.
Hughes wasn’t selected to participate in the four-ball opening session, but he came out on the first tee box to pump up the Quebec crowd and his International Team.
The 33-year-old golfer is one of three Canadians on the squad at this week’s tournament, and he made the most of playing in front of his countrymen.
Hughes whipped out a can of Stella Artois and got down on one knee, throwing back the adult beverage, much to the delight of the fans.
After he finished the beer, Hughes got up and waved his arms into the air to further thrill the attendees.
Hughes was one of Mike Weir’s captain’s picks for this year’s tournament, which pits American golfers against a team from across the globe.
The viral moment was reminiscent of a beer chug during the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger both slammed beers before an afternoon session of that tournament, exciting that crowd.
The Presidents Cup has been dominated by the Americans for quite some time, as the U.S. has won all but one over the past three decades.
The tournament runs from Thursday through Sunday.
