McDonald’s is serving a new look for its beloved McFlurry.
After ditching the iconic yet confusing McFlurry spoons in favor of a more sustainable design last October, McDonald’s announced they’re making another sustainable change to the sweet treat.
The old cup and plastic lid will be swapped out for a four-flap cup, which will reduce waste and help the company’s goal of sourcing 100% of primary guest packaging from renewable, recycled or certified materials by the end of 2025, according to a press release.
“Packaging updates like this matter,” Michael Gonda, SVP, Chief Impact Officer of North America for McDonald’s, said in a statement. “Not only is this a fun new way for our U.S. fans to enjoy the McFlurry; we’re also moving one step closer to fulfilling our packaging and waste commitments.”
The four-flap McFlurry cups are already available in other countries like Canada and Indonesia, and this month it’s rolling out in the United States.
In addition to phasing out the plastic lid, McDonald’s is introducing a smaller sized McFlurry for those who want just a little taste.
Starting Sept. 10, customers can go to participating Golden Arches to get a Mini McFlurry, which the fast-food chain describes as “a mini serving of everyone’s favorite sweet treat.”
“Got a friend who always wants ‘just a bite’? Instead of grabbing an extra spoon, you can grab them a Mini McFlurry of their own. Or maybe you’re looking for a quick afternoon pick-me-up… the Mini McFlurry is perfect for you, too.”
