Imagine settling into your well-deserved family vacation, by the resort pool, enjoying the splashing sound and laughter of your children and other relaxed vacationers.
Then imagine hearing a clicking sound that sounds oddly familiar while you take a sip of your cocktail.
The clicking sound of … wait … are they … NAIL CLIPPERS?!
For mom Katy, who was recently holidaying in Dubai, that’s exactly the sound she heard — and all of her gross fears were confirmed.
Taking to TikTok, the mom-of-three shared how she came face-to-face with the “gross act” while relaxing on the sun lounge.
“I’m like, I know what sound that is, please do not let it be true, right near where I’m sitting,” she shared in the viral video.
“So I’m reading my book, ignoring the sound… But I know exactly what the sound is. Some dirty pig is cutting their toenails — about 15 feet away from me,” she explains.
“A man, a grown man, is cutting his toenails by the pool. I can’t.
“How am I so shocked by the nature of some people?”
But that’s not the worst of it
But what he did next was even worse than the clipping.
The man was then faced with what to do with all his nail clippings and his solution was to shake all the nails off his towel and “onto the floor” around the public pool.
The woman couldn’t believe what she was seeing and asked her followers if she was the only one who thought this was gross and strange.
“Please tell me I’m not the only one totally disgusted by this,” she begged. “Surely cutting your toenails is a private thing, you don’t do it by a public pool?”
Gross or totally acceptable?
Many of Katy’s followers said they would also be mortified if they saw someone do this next to them anywhere in public — not just by a hotel pool.
“I’d be raging!” and “Why would you choose to do it round the pool and NOT in your room?!” were just a couple of the comments that perfectly summarized the vibe in the comments thread.
To further continue the conversation, I decided to take the question to people who read about “entitled acts” in public on a daily basis — the Kidspot team.
“Nope, that is absolutely disgusting. It’s gross enough seeing a band-aid floating in the water, but seeing someone’s rogue toenail would make me never want to step foot in a pool again,” one team member insisted.
Another agreed: “I’d be grossed out by that sort of behavior. While the pool and sunbeds may be a public shared space, it is just unhygienic to do. Please learn to use a bathroom instead 😖.”
Another mum said she would escalate the matter: “I would report it to hotel staff as it’s a major hygiene issue. We all know that fingernails and toenails harbor bacteria.”
And another mum insisted this was “entitlement at its worst”.
“Foul. Absolutely foul. With absolutely zero regard to your surroundings and/or the people who have to observe or even clean up after your mess,” she said.
