Renowned Southern California chef Rainer Schwarz has died following a solo car accident.
Schwarz was driving an Audi on Crown Valley Parkway near Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point, California, on Monday, April 6, when his vehicle veered off the roadway, traveled through landscaping and came to rest in a parking lot, Sgt. Gerard McCann shared with the Orange County Register.
Investigators were working to determine what caused the crash, which occurred just before 5 p.m. and after Schwarz had left one of his restaurants for the day.
Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 59 years old.
Us Weekly has reached out to police for comment.
“We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Rainer Schwarz, Executive Chef and Partner of Driftwood Kitchen and The Deck on Laguna Beach,” the Southern California restaurants said in a joint statement via Instagram on Wednesday, April 8. “More than a remarkable culinary talent, he brought together a rich cultural heritage and world-class experience to create unforgettable dining experiences for all who walked through our doors.”
The statement continued, “Beyond the kitchen, he was deeply committed to his community, generously supporting nonprofit events and fostering a close-knit network of chefs built on collaboration and mentorship. That community proved especially vital during COVID, as chefs came together to support one another and those in need.”
Schwarz began his culinary journey at 15 and soon found himself in Switzerland working with Chef Joachim Splichal.
He later moved to California to work at Los Angeles’ renowned Patina and Pinot restaurants. He later opened Cienega at L’Ermitage, launching his career in the United States.
“Chef Rainer’s legacy lives on in every dish and every guest experience he shaped,” his restaurants said in a statement. “He believed deeply in hospitality as a way to bring people together. We are profoundly grateful for his lasting impact and will continue to honor his vision in all we do. Our hearts are with his wife, Tasha, and his son, Max, during this difficult time.”
In his final social media post before his death, Schwarz shared a video from inside one of his restaurant’s kitchens. He proceeded to showcase his latest creation.
“Persimmon tarte tatin / buratta / basil,” he wrote via Instagram in November 2025.
After Schwarz’s death, former Top Chef contestant Amar Santana returned to the post and commented, “Love you bro 💔 the best. My heart aches 🙏🏼😢.”
