A few hours after losing his cool on one of his players, Steve Kerr admitted he had some regret over his actions.

The Golden State Warriors coach melted down on Will Richard late in the first half of Golden State’s Sunday-night matchup with the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, after the shooting guard turned over the basketball.

Richard had received a poor pass from Brandin Podziemski, and in an effort to try to save possession of it, he hurled the ball behind his back, which ticked off Kerr.

“The ball matters,” the 60-year-old could be heard screaming at Richard from the sideline. “The ball is everything.”

The outburst quickly drew ire from fans, who believed the turnover was Podziemski’s fault. And after the game, Kerr relented his critics were probably right.

“I kind of regret losing my composure a little bit there,” he told reporters in a press conference. “Because it’s my job to keep the guys going. Especially when we’re without so many players.”

Kerr explained he had originally thought Richard “was trying to make an around-the-back pass for a score.” But he said he later learned the issue stemmed from Podziemski’s pass.

“He put Will in a tough spot,” Kerr said. “I probably shouldn’t have gotten as mad as I was.”

The Warriors, playing without Steph Curry, Draymond Green and a host of others, ended up losing the game, 110–107. They’re now just 1–6 in March.
