Zendaya and Robert Pattinson‘s killer romantic comedy The Drama just hit theaters with an unexpected twist that threatens to unravel the main characters’ lives.
The Drama may be pushing the boundaries of good taste with its secret, but it’s not the only comedy that’s added a touch of darkness to its jokes.
Watch With Us has put together three shocking movies you need to watch after The Drama that embrace those darker aspects.
There aren’t any conventional films that meet that criteria, but the ones that do are still pretty wild to watch years after their release.
‘Ingrid Goes West’ (2017)
Ingrid Goes West isn’t exactly a love story, but Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) does fall in love with the idea of Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen), an online influencer. Ingrid doesn’t want to romance Taylor; she kind of wants to be her, or at least her best friend. So she uproots her life and pours money into her move to the West Coast.
Once Ingrid settles into her new city, she does some pretty underhanded things to insinuate herself into Taylor’s life. But her ambitions are threatened by Taylor’s drug addict brother, Nicky Sloane (Billy Magnussen). Grift recognizes grift, and Ingrid has to get rid of Nicky before he ruins everything for her. But the really big surprises come from Taylor, and she isn’t the person Ingrid thought she was.

‘The Lobster’ (2016)
If it’s a Yorgos Lanthimos film, you can bet it’s going to be weird. The Lobster isn’t even as bizarre as Lanthimos’ later movies, but there are plenty of surreal touches in this dark comedy. This movie takes place in a world that attempts to force men and women into couples. Anyone who can’t be paired up after a month and a half is sentenced to transform into an animal of their choice. For David (Colin Farrell), that animal is going to be a lobster.
David is so desperate to avoid that fate that he’s willing to pretend to be someone he’s not just to find a woman to match with. A short-sighted woman (Rachel Weisz) may be David’s best hope for a romance he can live with. But first, he’ll have to escape his overseers and elude a cult of single people who are just as overbearing as the forces making him couple up. We won’t spoil the film’s ending, but that raises some questions about just how dark the film is willing to go.
The Lobster is streaming on HBO Max.
‘The Opposite of Sex’ (1998)
Christina Ricci is kind of a monster in The Opposite of Sex, not because she’s literally a creature. It’s because Dedee Truitt (Ricci) has no moral compass or even a shred of conscience about the people that she hurts or the lives that she leaves in ruins. She’s 16 years old and pregnant, but just as happy to steal Matt Mateo (Ivan Sergei), the boyfriend of her half-brother, Bill Truitt (Martin Donovan). That’s the thanks Bill gets for taking Dedee in while she was in need.
When Dedee and Matt elope, Bill and his friend, Lucia De Lury (Lisa Kudrow), attempt to track them down. Meanwhile, the father of Dedee’s baby, Randy Cates (William Lee Scott), is looking for her, too. By the time this mess gets sorted out, hearts will break and friendships will come to an end.
