As has become his custom for the anniversary date, Todd Zeile will spend next Wednesday morning at Engine 3, Ladder 12 in Manhattan, commemorating the five firefighters from that station who perished on 9/11.
Twenty-three years after the attacks at the World Trade Center, the former Mets first baseman remains interconnected with the first responders and families who endured loss on one of the worst days in United States history.
Zeile, along with John Franco, Al Leiter, Robin Ventura, Mike Piazza and manager Bobby Valentine, visited Ground Zero within a few days of the attacks and were warmly received. It was the beginning of Zeile’s realization that baseball had a role in the nation’s healing, especially in New York City.
Zeile is proud of a new endeavor that will help tell that story: He is executive producer of a documentary that will be released in 2026 for the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
