Fans were begging Tony Romo to stick to his day job after the CBS analyst’s short rendition of “The Lion King’s” signature song on Thanksgiving.
Romo was in the booth with Jim Nantz for the Lions’ clash with the Bears on Thursday afternoon.
During a break in the action, Nantz commented on parents lifting up young fans on Ford Field’s “Cub Cam” during the second quarter of Detroit’s eventual 23-20 victory.
“Amazing shots of today’s game are provided by Nationwide as babies are hoisted in the air to the sounds of the Lion King, the ‘Circle of Life.’ Beautiful moment here,” Nantz said. “As we see Jared Goff…”
It was at that point the 44-year-old Romo broke into a soft, but pitchy version of the opening of Elton John and Han Zimmer’ “Circle of Life.”
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was off tune and didn’t sing the correct lyrics – which include the indigenous South African language, Zulu.
It didn’t go over well with fans.
“’Tony Romo just tried to sing the Lion King song. It was not pretty,” user @allbuisnesspat wrote on X.
Added @MeLlamoAdrrian: “Ayo!!! somebody tell Tony Romo to never do that again. Who said singin that Lion King song was okay??’
One fan sounded like they would not be able to unhear Romo’s rendition.
“Tony Romo singing The Circle of Life is going to haunt my dreams,” @jordanzirm wrote.
It was an all-time forgettable Thanksgiving moment for another.
“Jim Nantz saying that kids being held up like lions from The Lion King is a beautiful moment and sounding like he was tearing up only for Tony Romo to try and sing Circle of Life might be a top least favourite NFL moment of all time,’ another ripped,” @jake_shulz6 posted. ‘Happy Thanksgiving, y’all.’”
It was at least a happy Thanksgiving for the Lions, who moved to 11-1 with the help of some questionable decisions by Bears coach Matt Eberflus.
