The Philadelphia 76ers won the LeBron James free agent sweepstakes this summer.
VJ Edgecombe, like many basketball fans, was extremely excited to welcome the four-time NBA champion to the team. The 21-year-old had the chance to speak with James directly after the two-year, $8 million deal was announced, which he detailed during an interview at the ABCD Basketball Camp.
“I FaceTimed Bron. I was in disbelief, but I had to act cool. I had to act like I’d been there before. I’m on the phone all cool and stuff. My headphones on, I’m playing the game. Had to act all cool, but it’s really Bron. I was really geekin’ I ain’t gone lie,” Edgecombe said.
The ongoing free agency saga surrounding James was the headline story of the NBA summer and the 41-year-old’s decision to join the 76ers was quite the stunning denouement.
James is set to star alongside Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey as well as the young rising star in Edgecombe.
The latter of who was born in 2005, two years after James made his NBA debut in 2003. Now, Edgecombe and James are set to be teammates, which makes the guard’s giddiness that much more authentic as he quite literally grew up watching the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
The 76ers face immense pressure to win a championship this upcoming season and Philadelphia’s roster is equipped to do just that. The arrival of James has made Edgecombe the fifth option for the 76ers, but he’s expected to continue developing around some of the league’s biggest stars.
