Detroit Lions cornerback Khalil Dorsey was carted off the field on Sunday, December 15, after suffering a gruesome ankle injury.
Dorsey, 26, collided with teammate Ezekiel Turner during the second quarter of the team’s game against the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field in Detroit.
In the aftermath of the injury, Dorsey’s teammates took to a knee and surrounded him on the field. Lions head coach Dan Campbell also made his way to Dorsey to check on his injured player.
After being put in an air cast, Dorsey was taken off the field on a cart in obvious distress.
According to CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, Dorsey had been transported to a local hospital.
Dorsey had been inserted into the game after an injury to Lions starting cornerback Carlton Davis III.
The Lions immediately ruled Davis out of the game with an ankle injury.
The graphic nature of Dorsey’s injury, which played out on the CBS broadcast, brought immediate reaction from viewers on social media.
“Lions hit with another injury,” one person wrote via X. “I feel so bad for these players personally, and as a team I don’t know if I’ve seen a squad so decimated by injuries. Praying for a safe, and healthy recovery for Khalil Dorsey.”
Another wrote, “Man, prayers up for Lions #30 Khalil Dorsey…that’s just horrible. Hate seeing that happen.”
Some fans also criticized Bills wide receiver Mack Hollins, who appeared to point at and mock Dorsey while he was on the ground.
“The Bills used to be my second favorite team but after watching Mack Hollins taunt a guy who snapped his leg in half I can’t wait to watch them exit in the first round of the playoffs,” one person wrote via X. “Karma always finds a way to catch up to people like that.”
Another wrote, “If Mack Hollins really was laughing at Khalil Dorsey’s injury and mocking him, he deserves any consequences he gets for it. That should never be tolerated, especially with what this team went through in 2023.”
The social media user was referencing Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest during a game in January 2023. Hamlin, 26, would eventually return to action at the start of the 2024-’25 season.
In 2023, Dorsey revealed he had been diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis, a medical condition that affects the kidneys.
“Definitely messes with your mind mentally, just because you want to go 100 percent all the time,” Dorsey told reporters at the time. “But, it’s like, in the back of my mind, if I go 100 percent all the time, all these plays, is it gonna affect me? But, I’m gonna do it.”
