A woman has been given a gross shock after putting her washing machine through an empty self-cleaning cycle.
Content creator @thatcleanhome grossed out many of her followers when she shared a video on TikTok showing the disgusting amount of brown water that came from a cycle with no clothes in the drum.
“And this right here is why you need to clean your washing machine,” she says in the viral video.
The woman, who is passionate about home cleaning and shares many tips to help others on her platform, went on to explain that her machine was otherwise clean and in good shape — it’s just the reality of what gunk accumulates over time.
“The crazy thing is the filter was clean on this washer so I didn’t think it would be too bad,” she said.
“But when I put the cleaner in and put it on self-clean, it was a four-hour cycle and this is in the last hour… so… imagine thinking your clothes were clean getting washed in this!”
A gross reminder many appreciated
The video caught the attention of over 2,000 people, who hit the comments section with equal disgust.
“OMG I thought that was just dirt from the clothes,” someone said.
“Yikes! Yep putting this on my to do list,” added another grossed out follower.
Another person chimed in with “The worst part about adulting is having to clean the things that help you clean” while others thanked the content creator for the reminder.
How often do you need to clean your washing machine?
While many people suggested front loaders were the worst when it comes to grime and dirt build-up in washing machines, others said they have been putting their machines through a self-cleaning cycle after making a similar discovery.
“OMG I did the same the other day. I couldn’t believe the dark filth!” someone shared.
But the biggest question people had was if we do need to put our washing machine through an empty cycle to ‘clean’ it, how often should we be doing it?
“I do this once a week now,” shared one.
And another recommended “twice a month at least!”
Do you?
