WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — John Harbaugh brought a uniform fashion statement from Baltimore to the Giants.
Special patches on the left side of their jerseys are being worn by players who earned certain accolades or milestones. This is a tradition Harbaugh started in 2008, his first year as the head coach of the Ravens.
“They are kind of an honoring of the military award medal type things,’’ Harbaugh said Thursday after practice.
Left tackle Andrew Thomas sported two different logos on his white rectangular patch. There is one sword, referencing his one playoff appearance with the Giants. There is a muscular arm holding a Giants hammer and a red star, signifying Thomas’ attendance at the spring workout program.
“Then there’s other things you’ll see as we go, once we get the games going,’’ Harbaugh said, mentioning that Pro Bowl appearances and “different kinds of game awards’’ will eventually be represented in the patches.
Jaxson Dart completed his first 10 passes in the team periods Wednesday as the offense dominated on Day 1.
This was not the case for the second practice of training camp, as the completions were more difficult to attain and the pressure up front was ramped up on defense.
After a quiet first day, WR Darnell Mooney hauled in a deep floater from Dart for a touchdown. … A hard count by Dart got RT Jermaine Eluemunor to jump offside, much to the delight of OLB Brian Burns, who did a little dance in the backfield. … Rookie Dominic Zvada hit a 57-yard field goal on the final play of practice.
Safety Jevón Holland was born in British Columbia, Canada, and went to college at Oregon, meaning he appreciates all the greenery from the Allegheny Mountains surrounding the practice fields at The Greenbrier Sports Performance Center.
“It’s fun,’’ he said. “I like being near trees and whatnot. Trees are my friend. I love it. So, I’m enjoying the atmosphere.’’
Holland, though, is skeptical about venturing out after dark, apparently buying into local myths.
“I heard about the Appalachian Mountains, Skinwalkers,’’ Holland said. “I’m a bit of a conspiracy theorist. I asked the bus driver. I was like, ‘You heard about Skinwalkers?’ He was like, ‘I just let it go in one ear and out the other.’ So, that’s all I needed to know — not to go out at night.’’
