This doesn’t sound like one of those classic Cris Collinsworth-Patrick Mahomes sound bites we’ve come to expect on “Sunday Night Football.”
The normally awe-struck NBC broadcaster saw a different version of the Chiefs quarterback than we’ve come to expect, and Collinsworth wasn’t his usual complimentary self in a 20-3 blowout loss to the Seahawks on Sunday.
“That’s the second time I’ve seen that look on Patrick Mahomes’ face,” Collinsworth said in the fourth quarter and the Chiefs having been embarrassed offensively. “When he went back and recovered that fumble earlier, I saw that same sort of ‘I can’t believe this is happening to me’ look. There it is again. Have you ever seen that look on Patrick Mahomes?”
Mahomes gives a sort of eye-roll mixed with clear frustration after he couldn’t lead Kansas City on a touchdown drive in the marquee Week 7 game against the Super Bowl champions.
The play came after Mahomes faced pressure on 19 of 36 dropbacks (53 percent), the fourth-highest rate of any game of his career between the regular season and playoffs.
After the game, Mahomes gave a snippet of perhaps some frustration with the pieces around him being so young and the lack of veteran presence.
“If you don’t come ready to play, you can get your tail kicked in this league,” Mahomes said postgame. “We have a young team; it’ll be how we respond from this.”
The Chiefs’ aura was broken last year when they failed to make the playoffs and Mahomes tore his ACL in December.
General manager Brett Veach tried rebuilding the Chiefs’ offense by signing Kenneth Walker in the offseason to alleviate some of the pressure on Mahomes.
And Walker had been dominant throughout the Chiefs’ 5-0 start but was shut down by his former teammates on Sunday night, running for 36 yards on 14 carries.
Mahomes was 19-for-33 for 165 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. His leading receivers were tight ends Noah Gray and Travis Kelce, who had 44 yards each.
Xavier Worthy, their supposed top receiver, caught three passes for 11 yards, while rookie Cyrus Allen caught one for 18 yards. Rashee Rice missed his second straight game with hamstring and knee issues.
With the trade deadline approaching on Nov. 10, many suspect that the Chiefs could be active in trade talks for a wide receiver or perhaps look to re-sign Tyreek Hill.
After one of the worst games of Mahomes’ career, the Chiefs will look to reboot their offense Sunday in Denver against the Broncos.
