Countryside-inspired adventure series returns with an unforgettable story of mystery, resilience and the natural world
Author Michael Mathers has released New Horizons Book 2, the latest entry in his growing fiction series. Blending adventure, memorable characters and richly described natural settings, the new novel continues to explore the powerful relationship between people and the environment while introducing fresh challenges and intrigue.
The publication represents another important step in a writing career that began with an unexpected conversation between Michael and his close friend, author and accomplished classical pianist John Hursey. The two initially planned to write a book together, with Hursey producing the opening two pages before encouraging Michael to complete the story on his own. Looking back, Michael believes his friend intentionally gave him the confidence to begin a creative journey that has since become both rewarding and successful.
Inspired by decades spent working in forestry and surrounded by wildlife, birds and the countryside, Michael has built a series grounded in genuine experience. His firsthand knowledge allows him to create believable landscapes and animal characters that bring authenticity to every story.
The opening two books in the New Horizons series take place on a secluded island off Scotland’s rugged west coast, where isolation and the beauty of nature shape the unfolding events. In New Horizons Book 2, readers return to this striking setting as the bond between humanity and the environment continues to influence every chapter.
As the series develops, the focus gradually widens beyond the island. The Scottish mainland becomes increasingly significant before Book Three shifts the action completely to the dramatic west coast, providing a larger stage for the story while preserving its strong connection to nature.
Among the many animals featured throughout the books, Calvin the pig has become Michael’s favourite character after appearing in Book Three. Ironically, Calvin is the only animal Michael has never personally worked with. He jokes that he hopes the other animal characters never find out.
The books also offer more than action and adventure. A subtle thread runs beneath every relationship and event, encouraging readers to uncover its meaning for themselves as the story progresses.
Alongside the physical struggles experienced by the characters is an element of mystery and the unexplained. Michael leaves it to each reader to decide how these themes fit together, inviting discussion and personal interpretation.
Book Three raises the stakes as the three main characters face an intense fight for survival. With danger closing in from every direction, they must rely on courage, determination and resilience to overcome seemingly impossible odds. Whether those qualities will be enough remains at the heart of the story.
The book is published by Maple Publishers, a UK-based publishing company recognised for supporting creative authors while providing professional book cover design and book layout services.
