Rob Havenstein has gone from blocking Chicago Bears to hunting real-life ones.
The former Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman shared in a Thursday social media post that he shot and killed a huge mature brown bear during a recent trip to Alaska.
In a carousel of 14 photos that the 34-year-old posted to his Instagram page, Havenstein showed off the massive beast he took down, and in the caption, the newly retired NFL player raved over the journey he took to score his big trophy.
“I knew when I retired that I wanted to go somewhere wild, experience something outside of my comfort zone and chase incredible critters,” Havenstein said.
“Alaskan Brown Bear presented that opportunity. The main goal was obviously to hunt a mature brown bear, but what I took home with me was so much more than that.
“Appreciation for these incredible animals and the beautiful habitat they live in. From snowy mountain peaks, bountiful salmon waters and wet and windy gravel beaches. A truly remarkable hunt.”
In the photos he shared, the dead animal’s mass was noticeable. Havenstein, who played right tackle for the Rams at 6 feet 8, 322 pounds, was not even half of its size.
“Bro that thing is massive! Well done good sir,” wrote one commenter.
Several NFLers dropped by Havenstein’s comment section to praise him for the hunt, with current Rams defensive back Josh Wallace writing, “If you see me with a bear, save the bear !!!”
Havenstein was picked by the Rams in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft and he went on to play the entirety of his 11-year career for the team.
He won one Super Bowl, and LA head coach Sean McVay called him “an all-time Ram” after he announced his retirement in February.
“He’s a legacy player,” McVay said of Havenstein. “He’s a legacy human being, more importantly.”
