The most maligned of all astrological transits, Mercury retrograde is synonymous with misfires, misunderstandings, cancelled flights, and missed connections.
“We brace for impact when it comes to Mercury retrograde, often resigning ourselves to three weeks of frustration,” Hong Kong-based certified counselor and award-winning astrologist Letao Wang told The Post. “But what if we’ve been looking at this astrological phenomenon all wrong?”
Mercury retrograde dates
Mercury will be retrograde from February 26 to March 20 and will clear its post-retrograde shadow on April 9.
Next Mercury retrograde
After this cycle, Mercury will go retrograde in the sign of Cancer on June 29.
What does Mercury retrograde mean?
Mercury is the planet of communication, connection, expression, media, technology, travel, and commerce. Contrary to the terminology, Mercury and other planets do not ever move backward in space; they merely slow down, a deceleration that appears to be a reversal from our vantage point on Earth.
When a planet is retrograde, its energy works in the opposite direction, not necessarily against us, but certainly not as a trusted sidekick.
Mercury retrograde 2026
Wang stated that in 2026, Mercury retrograde and the pervasive element of water offer us a chance to engage in profound inner work.
“All three retrogrades will occur in water signs—Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpio. This shifts the energy from the logical, communicative realm Mercury typically rules into the deep, intuitive, and emotional waters of the unconscious. Instead of fearing the chaos, we can proactively use 2026’s retrogrades as a scheduled retreat for reflection, revision, and emotional intelligence,” said Wang.

Wang shared that when Mercury moves through the other elements, disruptions take on the respective flavor of that element.
“In air or fire signs, the disruptions tend to be overt—arguments, technology glitches, and logistical puzzles. In earth signs, the focus might be on practical matters, such as finances or work projects. But water signs deal with feeling, memory, and intuition,” Wang said.
He notes that Mercury’s backstroke through the holy trinity of water signs is a summons to slow down and thoughtfully process what we typically suppress or emotionally exile.
“It’s less about ‘What did I say?’ and more about ‘Why did I feel that way?” It’s a year to revise our emotional narratives, not just our contracts.”
Mercury Retrograde in Pisces (February 26 – March 20, 2026)
Wang imparts that Mercury is “in fall” in Pisces, meaning the planet’s logical nature is undertowed in a murky sea of feeling and refractions.
“Making concrete, life-altering decisions now is like trying to read a map underwater—the details are blurred. The shadow side here involves confusion, escapism, and the potential for old addictive patterns to resurface.”
Wang shared that your best bet for this retrograde is not to fight the fog but flow with it.
“This is the perfect period for activities that bypass linear thinking. Keep a dream journal. Schedule time for meditation, gentle yoga, or walks in nature. Let your intuition speak through creative projects, such as painting or music. Revisit a spiritual practice. The goal is not to decide your future but to clarify your inner vision and compassion, so you can make wiser choices once the fog lifts,” Wang explained.
Mercury Retrograde in Cancer (June 29 – July 23, 2026)
In Cancer, Merucy brings our attention to themes of home, family, and emotional security.
“Conversations may unexpectedly unearth past hurts or family dynamics. You might find yourself reacting with surprising sensitivity. Issues related to real estate, parents, or childhood memories could resurface for review,” explained Wang.
Wang recommends using the homebound energy of this retrograde to focus on emotional and domestic revisions.
“Have that caring conversation with a family member that you’ve been putting off. Go through old photo albums and reconcile with your past. Reorganize your living space to better nurture your emotional well-being.”
Wang also shared that patience is the virtue to practice during this transit, and we should all seek to be tender with the heightened feelings of others and ourselves.
“Ask, ‘Is this reaction about now, or is it an echo from the past?’ This retrograde is about healing the roots so you can grow with greater stability.”
Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio (October 24 – November 13, 2026)
As the Pluto-ruled sign of the unconscious underbelly, Scorpio demands truth and transformation.
“This retrograde delves into the deep end: shared finances, taxes, inheritances, psychological power dynamics, and the process of letting go. It’s a potent time for uncovering hidden information, but a risky one for making investments or entering new financial agreements. Tensions in intimate partnerships may arise, revealing underlying issues of trust or control.”
Wang encourages us all to embrace what he calls the “annual audit of the profound.”
“Review wills, insurance policies, and debt structures. Initiate honest, transformative conversations about intimacy and shared resources. It’s an excellent period for therapy, shadow work, or any practice that helps you release old emotional baggage. The mandate is to detoxify, forgive, and relinquish control over what is no longer serving your highest good,” Wang said.
Reframing the Retrograde: A schedule for the soul
Wang shared that reframing Mercury retrograde not as a period of planetary punishment but as scheduled maintenance for the soul allows us to reap the rewards of these transits and even treat them as we would a quiet vacation. During these times, he recommends the following practices:
- Practice patience: Allow extra time and grace for misunderstandings, knowing the communication is navigating emotional undercurrents.
- Revise and review: Perfect ongoing projects, edit manuscripts, revisit old plans, and reconnect with people from your past.
- Reflect and feel: Use the water sign energy to your advantage. Journal, contemplate, and process your emotional landscape.
“By shifting from a mindset of fear to one of intentional engagement, you transform Mercury retrograde from a time of external chaos into a sacred pause,” said Wang.
“In 2026, let the water signs guide you. Dive beneath the surface, do the necessary emotional work, and emerge from each retrograde period clearer, cleaner, and more emotionally integrated than before. The planets aren’t causing problems; they’re offering a deep, healing breath in our relentlessly forward-marching lives,” advised Wang.
