Atlanta-based rapper DJ Unk’s cause of death has reportedly been revealed.
Dj Unk’s wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed to TMZ on Sunday, January 26, that the musician died in his sleep several days earlier on Friday, January 24. Long-Platt also claimed that DJ Unk had suffered a heart attack.
Hours after DJ Unk’s death, Long-Platt issued a statement via her Facebook page.
“Please respect me and my family,” Long-Platt wrote. “I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
Long-Platt is now planning a candlelight vigil for DJ Unk (real name Anthony Platt) in his native Atlanta to be held Sunday night.
DJ Unk’s former record label, Big Oomp Records, also issued a statement following his death.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as DJ Unk,” an Instagram statement read. “On behalf of Big Oomp Records and the BOR Family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.”
The statement added, “DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever. Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.”
DJ Unk rose to fame in 2000 when he signed with Big Oomp Records, later releasing debut album Beat’n Down Yo Block! in 2006. He dropped his second LP in 2008, one year before he had what appears to be his first heart attack.
“It comes from not exercising, from not eating right. Basically man, I work hard every day,” DJ Unk told XXL Magazine in 2010 of what led to the cardiac incident. “Everything I do every day I try to make something happen in my household. I constantly be on the go, I constantly be on airplanes, in different weather and you know it just took a toll on me. It was stress.”
According to DJ Unk, he subsequently “calmed down” on both drinking and smoking after the health scare.
“I just don’t go ham like I did before; everything was so fast,” he added at the time. “Instead of praying once like before, I go twice a day.”
