2,319 matches down, one to go.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, John Cena will enter the ring one final time for his last WWE match at Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena.
He’s slated to go head-to-head with two-time heavyweight champion Gunther at Saturday .
“The Ring General” received the honor of fighting Cena after he took down LA Knight in the “The Last Time is Now” tournament finale.
Before that match, Gunther said “the name ‘Ring General Gunther’ internationally translates to victory. So I’m going to beat LA Knight and I’m going to beat John Cena. So John, I know we all can’t see you but I’m certain that you can see me.”
Interestingly enough, this will be the pair’s first major singles match since they are from different eras. Prognosticators, like Gunther, are predicting a Gunther win.
“John Cena cannot win his last match on his way out, as that would be a massive mistake,” Daily DDT noted. “WWE cannot build tomorrow by constantly retreating to yesterday. Gunther has the credibility and momentum a rising star should have when taking the mantle away from a legendary veteran.”
If you’d like to attend this high-stakes match and root for WWE’s past or present, last-minute tickets are still available on the primary and secondary market.
At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find to get in the door was $339 including fees on Vivid Seats.
Floor-level seats start at $747 including fees on Ticketmaster.
Joining Cena and Gunther on the card for the retirement evening are major players. They are:
WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. NXT Champion Oba Femi
Bayley vs. Sol Ruka
World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles and Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater

John Cena upcoming film projects
As Cena winds down his time in the ring, he’s spending more time than ever on set. On top of his work in “Peacemaker,” here are all the films coming from him this year and next:
“Coyote vs. Acme” is a long-awaited hybrid of live-action and animation from Warner Bros. bringing comedy ringers like Cena, Will Forte, P.J. Byrne, Luis Guzmán and Martha Kelly together with the Looney Tunes, particularly Wile E. Coyote who sues Acme since every product he’s ever used of theirs while chasing Road Runner has failed spectacularly. Courtroom cartoons? Sign us up.
“Matchbox” stars Cena as “a former soldier who reunites with childhood friends after a successful mission, only to be kidnapped and framed,” according to The Prague Reporter. Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris and Corey Stoll round out the star-studded cast.
“The Janson Directive” tells the story of former Navy SEAL and prisoner of war, Paul Janson, who works as a corporate security consultant, but when an assignment to rescue a VIP goes wrong, he’s forced to go on the run.
“Little Brother” pits Cena against anarchic comic Eric André in a story about a realtor whose orderly life is upended by his eccentric younger brother. Other big names joining the pair in the Netflix film include Michelle Monaghan, Christopher Meloni, Ego Nwodim, and Sherry Cola.
“The Leading Man” teams Cena up with Kevin Hart in a tale where a self-absorbed movie star discovers that his co-star/man in the chair is an actual agent. As a result, he’s forced to swallow his pride and accept that action stars aren’t really action heroes…while trying to save the world.
