A popular Southern California bakery is cooking up something big.
Los Angeles-based Porto’s Bakery and Café is bringing its sought-after Cuban pastries to the Inland Empire with a new location in Ontario, California, the burgeoning brand announced this week.
The sprawling, 50,000-square-foot location will stretch across three buildings and include a restaurant, café, and retail space.
The outpost will be be part of a new 8.6-acre commercial development at the southwest corner of Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard, just a mile away from Ontario Airport, a popular alternative to LAX.
“For years, we’ve welcomed guests from across the Inland Empire who have traveled to visit our bakeries, and we’re excited to finally have a home here,” said Raul Porto, CEO of Porto’s Bakery & Café in a press release.
“We’re grateful for Ontario’s warm welcome. Our family has always valued the connections we build with the people and communities we serve, and we can’t wait to welcome guests to this new and special place.”
“Anchored by Porto’s, this new retail destination will bring hundreds of local jobs and draw thousands of visitors each day, making it a significant addition to Ontario’s local economy,” said Jennifer McLain Hiramoto, Executive Director for the City of Ontario Economic Development Agency in a press release.
“This investment will transform a site that has remained vacant for years into a new center for dining and retail, creating opportunities for businesses and bringing new activity to this part of the city.”
Known for their signature cheese rolls, refugiados, and potato balls, Porto’s was founded in 1960 by Cuban refugee Rosa Porto, who settled in LA’s Echo Park neighborhood. The business remains family-run, with the second and third generations of the Porto family still at the helm.
The bakery currently has locations in Glendale, West Covina, Burbank, Downey, Northridge, and Buena Park. In April a new location at Anaheim’s Downtown Disney was announced. That location will offer table service and a full bar.
Construction on the Ontario location is set to begin in 2027, with an opening projected for 2028.
Fans rejoiced at the new Inland Empire location — which will be the third outside of Los Angeles County.
“Just when I was starting to get in shape,” one social media user wrote.
“What’s the estimated completion date?! So I know how much longer I gotta drive to West Covina,” a second commenter said.
“This is the best news ever! Their pastries are absolutely amazing! Second to NONE in my humble opinion! The lines, out the door.. Congratulations, looking forward to your grand opening..,” said a third.
