The Los Angeles Rams are making a change at kicker.
NFL insider Ian Rapaport reported that the Rams are moving on from kicker Harrison Mevis on Tuesday. This comes one day after Mevis missed two critical field goals in the Rams’ 37-34 overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
The ‘thiccer kicker,’ as he has been nicknamed going back to his day at the University of Missouri, is now looking for a new job.
The 24-year-old missed a 50-year field goal attempt in the first quarter, then had a 48-yard field goal blocked in overtime that would have won the game.
Mevis has been brutal through five games this season, as his 55.6% field goal percentage is dead last in the league.
Head coach Sean McVay hinted that changes were necessary after the Rams’ persistent special teams struggles cost them another win, and Mevis is the first domino to fall.
Rapoport also added that the Rams signed kicker Blake Grupe off the New York Jets’ practice squad, so they wasted no time finding a replacement for Mevis.
Grupe is a 27-year-old kicker who spent 11 games with the New Orleans Saints and five games with the New York Jets in 2025.
He went 18 for 26 on field goals (69.2%) with New Orleans before going a perfect 11 for 11 with the Colts last season. He also nailed a 60-yard kick for the Colts at one point.
Special teams has been a prolonged problem for the Rams.
Since the start of 2025, the Rams have accumulated an eye-popping minus-84.3 special teams EPA. The next-worst team, the New Orleans Saints, sits at minus-65.1.
Monday was the latest example of an elite offensive game going to waste.
In the heartbreaker, Los Angeles became the first team in NFL history to amass 400+ total yards of offense, gain 30 or more first downs, score at least five touchdowns, convert on better than 50% of its third downs without a turnover, and lose the game.
