Taylor Fritz was cruising until he was left to wonder what could have been.
The ninth-ranked American easily took the first two sets from No. 24-ranked Francisco Cerundolo.
Fritz would then see it all get washed away in a gut-punch, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 4-6 third-round loss at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Fritz, who was a finalist at the U.S. Open two years ago, even led 4-2 in the second set.
He was the second-highest-ranked American in the tournament as the men try to win a Grand Slam for the first time since Andy Roddick won the U.S. Open in 2023.
